Beacon High School’s Alex Callaway fires a pitch against Our Lady of Lourdes in Poughkeepsie.

2016 Beacon Bulldogs
Coach — Bobby Atwell

How many years have you been coaching at your current school? 27 years, 19 as varsity head coach.

How did your team fare last season? 13-9-1, beat Lourdes and Yorktown, then lost to Lincoln in the Class A sectional quarters.

Who are the top players that you lost to graduation? Ryan Frost (All-County, All-League, All-Section, All-State) currently at SUNY New Paltz.

Who are your key returning players?
Jason  Antalek, Sr., LHP/1B (Iona signee, All-County, All-League, HM All-Section)
Brendon Malouf, Sr., RHP/ INF (LIU Brooklyn commit, All-League)
Alex Callaway, Jr., RHP/ INF (All-County, All-League)

How do you feel about your pitching entering the season? Our pitching should be strong and deep. We have two D-I pitchers on our staff (Antalek and Malouf), as well as a three-year starter (Callaway).

Your lineup? We definitely need to improve offensively as we have made that a priority in the preseason.

Your defense? Defensively we should be very solid as it was a strength last year and we return eight starters.

How would you describe your philosophy on how the game should be played? Our team will be well-prepared, practice hard and play hard from the first pitch.

How would you assess your team’s chances this season? We are looking forward to the season and believe we can compete at the highest level, which is difficult in Section 1 given the depth of talent.

When is your opening game? We open up against Our Lady of Lourdes on April 2.

On deck: Blind Brook

I’ll be posting at least one of these per day leading up to the start of the season at the end of the month. Coaches, if you did not receive a capsule email and would like to participate, please fill out the questions below and send them to me at vmercoglia@lohud.com.
