2016 Scarsdale Raiders
Coach — Doc Scholl

How many years have you been coaching at your current school? This is my 24th years coaching at Scarsdale and my 16th year as head coach.

How did your team fare last season? 8-11, lost to Fox Land in first round of the Class AA playoffs (8-0).

Who are the top players that you lost to graduation?
Pitching staff- Jacob Stein, Ryan Huo and Brian Rauch
Captains- SS Harrison Wirth, C Will Eisler and CF Spencer Shaev

Who are your key returning players? Jr. Capt. Tyler Mandel (3B), Sr. Capt. Scott Kelly (SS), Jr. Capt. KojI Sakulrat (1B), Sr. Capt. Josh Klein (P), Sr. Harry Chalfin (catcher), Jr. Devon McDonald (OF), Jr. Nat Ware (P/OF), Sr. Stephen Varlotta (2B), Sr. Teddy Delorenzo and Sr. Michael Wallach (P/SS).

How do you feel about your pitching entering the season? We are extremely excited to have Josh Klein to lead our staff. He had a 1.61 ERA over the offseason. Juniors Roy Krishnan, Christian Waterhouse, Nat Ware and Ben Brody are all fighting for the 2-3-4 spots on the staff. Michael Wallach must play a pivotal role as a spot starter and a pitcher out of the pen because he is the only other pitcher other than Klein with varsity experience.

Your lineup? Will be the strength of our team. The only players that have at this point confirmed a spot in the lineup are Tyler Mandel, who batted .491 and led the team in four hitting categories, Koji Sakulrat, Scott Kelly, Devon Mcdonald, Josh Cromwell (DH) and Harry Chalfin. The best bat this early spring has been newcomer Andrew Halperin, who will most likely be leading off for the Raiders. The rest of the spots will be a battle among many players.

Your defense? Another strength of our program…..
1B- Koji Sakukrat (best first baseman I have ever coached defensively)
2B- BATTLE: Josh Cromwell, Evan Maroney, Alex Caione, Josh Potter and Stephen Varlotta.
SS- Scott Kelly
3B- Tyler Mandel
C- Harry Chalfin and Dylan Doughty
LF- Devon Mcdonald
CF- Andrew Halperin
RF- BATTLE: Teddy Delorenzo, Jack Gorman, Nat Ware and Christian Waterhouse
DH- BATTLE: Josh Cromwell, Scott Cohen, Alex Caione and Josh Potter

How would you describe your philosophy on how the game should be played? We are the Kansas City Royals high school team and always have been. We quality at-bat it up and play small ball, trying to drive teams crazy.

How would you assess your team’s chances this season? Funny question…and as I answered the Scarsdale local paper….you never know anymore and I am tired of being wrong. The coaches jobs (including new assistant coach Jay Ciraco, coming over from Harrison) is to prepare the boys, make some adjustments using video analysis (I am currently one of the Elite Coaches for the HUDL app), work on the mental part of the game, and then it all depends on team chemistry and the desire to win.

When is your opening game? April 6 at Clarkstown North. 4:30 p.m. start.

On deck: Mahopac

I’ll be posting at least one of these per day leading up to the start of the season at the end of the month. Coaches, if you did not receive a capsule email and would like to participate, please fill out the questions below and send them to me at vmercoglia@lohud.com.
