2016 Tappan Zee Dutchmen
Coach — Mark Stanford

How many years have you been coaching at your current school? I am entering my 15th year as the varsity head coach and coached a number of years on the JV level before that.

How did your team fare last season? We were 10-10 in the regular season and lost in the opening round of Class A sectionals.

Who are the top players that you lost to graduation? Mike Barbato, Bryan Borruso, Anthony Ricci and Mike Chiapperino.

Who are your key returning players? I hope that all of the returning players will be keys to our success, but John Daly (Sr.; P/OF), Justin Powell (Jr.; P/OF), Kieran Gibson (Jr.; P/2B), Nick DelliPizzi (Sr.; P/OF) and Jack Sheehy (Jr.; C) all played major roles last year.

How do you feel about your pitching entering the season? This will hopefully be a strength for us. We return all of our starting pitchers and just about all of our relief pitchers as well.

Your lineup? We graduated some solid hitters, but there are a number of guys competing for 4-5 positions. These next few weeks are all about figuring out who will step up and earn those spots. We definitely have the potential to be a more balanced and dynamic lineup this year.

Your defense? With returning players behind the plate, up the middle, and in the outfield, we hope that this will be a strength.

How would you describe your philosophy on how the game should be played? High school baseball tends to be about pitching, capitalizing on opportunities, and making fewer mistakes than your opponent. We never want to get out-hustled, outworked, or out-thought.

How would you assess your team’s chances this season? We like how we look on paper, but we will have to wait and see if that potential translates into performance.

When is your opening game? We open up on April 2nd against East Ramapo

On deck: Horace Greeley
