Loyola pulls away from Sterlington

By

STERLINGTON — Loyola spoiled Sterlington’s homecoming in a 45-28 win on Friday night in a game between two teams who entered the contest at 4-0.

After both teams went up and down the field and ended the half tied at 28, Josh Hawboldt broke the tie with a 40-yard field goal. Loyola scored on its next possession on a 1-yard run by Jacob Allen to put the Flyers ahead 38-28 with 8:22 to go.

After the Flyers forced a punt, Ethan Stansell scored on a 28-yard run to close out the scoring. Stansell had 25 carries for 190 yards. Allen threw for 193 yards and Loyola is 5-0 for the first time since 2010.

“I’m so proud of our guys for getting better every week,’’ Loyola coach Steven Geter said. “We knew we couldn’t have a slow start and the offensive line played great. The defense made some big plays in the second half.’’

After Loyola’s Will Barlow recovered a fumble on the second play of the game, both teams spent the rest of the half trading touchdowns on every possession.

Stansell scored on a 12-yard run and Allen followed with three touchdown passes — 24 yards to Jonathan Murphy, then 70 and 31 yards to Tony Dorsey.

Sterlington scored on the final play of the half to tie the game at 28-all.

The Loyola defense tries to stop Sterlington's Darren Istre (3) during Friday’s game in Sterlington.
