After battling injuries for most of last season, Marco Gonzales is once again sidelined.
The left-handed pitcher, a former star at Rocky Mountain High School, first began feeling discomfort two-to-three weeks ago, Langosch reports. The St. Louis Cardinals prospect has seen the team doctor and will seek a second opinion this week. Clarity on the severity of the injury will come later in the week.
The 24-year-old Gonzales entered 2016 as St. Louis’ seventh-best prospect after being the organization’s first-round pick in 2013. He was limited to 17 starts last season with a shoulder injury.
Gonzales was slated to begin the season in Triple-A, serving as top No. 1 starter for the Cardinals top minor league affiliate. He was the winning pitcher in four consecutive high school state title games for Rocky Mountain from 2007-10.
