It hasn’t been too long since Marlette girls basketball won a conference title, but for this team it’s a new feeling.
The Red Raiders locked up the Greater Thumb Conference East title for the first time since the 2012-13 season by piecing together an 8-1 record before Friday’s finale.
For head coach Cathy Storm, seeing her senior quartet of Haley Cross, Morgan Klein, Caitlin Ellis and Breanna Cooper take the title couldn’t be more satisfying.
“We have a nice mixture of girls, we have four seniors that have done a good job of being leaders not just on the basketball court, but overall,” Storm said. “They’re just a great group of girls.”
Storm also noted how Marlette has a solid group of returning players coming back as well, including sophomore Emily Schaub and junior Caitlin Quade.
Everyone in a Red Raiders jersey knew how good the team was going to before this season, but seeing the completion of one of their goals is still a mixture of relief and accomplishment.
“You always have an idea how things will go, but you never know how the team mixes and how things play out,” Storm said. “But with the leadership and the great group of girls and how hard they worked, the expectations were high for them too.”
The next goal on the to-do list is next week’s Class C districts, where they will first play Capac — the host team.
“It’s a tough one,” Storm said. “We play Capac, and if we beat them we play Brown City and then we could see Sandusky in the finals.”
