Mars Hill football seconds that — Mackey is a 6-foot-1, 318-pound tackle who signed with the Lions during a Thursday afternoon ceremony attended by family, coaches and classmates in the Black Bears’ media center.

Mackey’s blocking helped Pisgah (8-4) place second in the Western North Carolina Athletic Conference last season. The team had a 1,000-yard rusher (senior Daniel VanVaerenbergh) and passer (junior Houston Rogers).

“Having everybody here today at my signing is a dream come true,” Mackey said.

“Pisgah is like a big family and it’s great to have so much support. We had a really good season and I’m going to miss playing here with my teammates.”

Mackey expects to play on the offensive side of the ball at Mars Hill, based off his conversations with Lions coaches.

He is the fourth mountain senior to commit or sign with Mars Hill football, joining Enka defensive end/tight end Bryson Buckner, Reynolds linebacker Aundreas Hill and Swain County defensive back/wide receiver Jordan Cody.

“I had a good visit. Mars Hill is a really nice place,” Mackey said.

“One thing I really like is you can feel the unity with their team.”
