With an emphasis on ‘team ball,’ Sal Konkle took the Marshall girls basketball program to the last day of the season for the second time in her life.
The first time came in 1981, when she was a standout senior at Marshall High School and the team finished runner-up in Class B.
In 2016 and with Konkle as their head coach, the Redhawks would not be denied a state championship at the Michigan State University Breslin Center.
After losing the season-opener, Konkle guided Marshall to 26 straight wins and its first Class B state title in girls basketball. For her efforts in leading the Redhawks, she has been selected as the 2015-16 Enquirer All-Area Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.
Konkle headlines the 2015-16 Enquirer All-Area Girls Basketball Team, as selected by area coaches and the Enquirer sports staff. She has some familiar company on the team as she is joined by her five starters in Emily Delmotte, Jill Konkle, Carlee Long, Taryn Long and Nikki Tucker.
Three other local squads saw teammates selected to the All-Area squad after guiding their programs to a successful season on the hardwood.
Athens won 16 games and a district championship behind Noelle Fuller and Jillayne Wheeler; Bellevue won 17 games and a district title led by Casie Shannon and Bailey Whitcomb; and Climax-Scotts recorded 20 victories with the help of identical twins Sydney and Taylor Macomber.
Rounding out the team and representing their schools are Coldwater’s Malorie Rzepka, Gull Lake’s Lauren Nusbaum, Homer’s Breanna McCone and Olivet’s Teona Feldpausch.
