Marysville girls basketball’s three seniors came into the program as conference champions.
Seniors Payton Husson, Devan Valko and Shannon Curley will also be leaving the program as conference champions as the Vikings won their fifth straight Macomb Area Conference title. This year was perfect with a 12-0 MAC Gold record.
With Husson and Valko being on the varsity team for four years and Curley for three, winning has clearly become contagious as they’ve gone 45-3 in the MAC Gold the last four seasons.
“If you step into our practice we are focused and intense every single day,” Husson said. “We don’t take a single day off and we don’t overlook any opponent and we are ready to play 100 percent of the time.”
Hard work is certainly the trait of all champions, but the Vikings have also added the mature characteristic of leaving their egos in at the door to the locker room. That’s highlighted by the team’s “Hype Squad” — the three-player group of Taylor Fogarty, Ashlee Will and Katie Roy that turns their time off the court into a barrel of energy during games.
“They genuinely get us pumped up during the games,” Husson said. “They take their title seriously … they’re very helpful for us and make us better everyday.”
While the MAC Gold title is the same old story, the Vikings are looking to get over the hump of the state playoffs. The Vikings last won the district in 2013, which is a streak they will be looking to snap next week.
“That’s always been the next piece to the puzzle,” Husson said. “We got the league, we are very much focused on districts and we’re trying to get over the hump of districts to get that regional title.”
