Growing up a Michigan State fan, Damian Chrcek’s college decision was pretty easy.
Over the years he’s had plenty of college hockey teams approach him about playing for their squad, but when the Green and White came in, it was nearly a done deal.
“I’ve always loved the Spartans,” Chrcek said. “You’re either a Michigan fan or Michigan State fan in this state, and I always loved the Spartans. It was an easy choice.”
Chrcek had a few colleges from in and out of Michigan looking to sign him. Along with growing up a Spartan fan, the “down to earth” demeanor of head coach Tom Anastos and Michigan State’s mutual interest pushed him to make it his future school.
“I mean, it’s Michigan State,” Chrcek said. “They really wanted me and I wanted a place that wanted me instead of a place that just offered. I fell in love with the coaches and campus.”
Chrcek – a 2014 Marysville grad – has been playing with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the British Columbia Hockey League for the last two seasons. Over those seasons, Chrcek has worked on the fine details of his game to go along with adding strength in the weight room.
“I’ve worked on the little details of my game and just the speed in the game,” Chrcek said. “I’ve also improved in the weight room and got my strength up.”
In the past – before Squirt hockey – Chrcek played with the Port Huron Flags. From there he went on to play for Belle Tire Hockey and Detroit Honeybaked, molding himself into an aggressive player on the defensive end.
“I would say I’m more of a physical, in-your-face defenseman,” Chrcek said. “In my opinion I skate pretty well, so I can skate up and put some points up.”
As far as goals for Chrcek, his are pretty simple – to help Michigan State become a winning program. Before he can lace up for the Spartans and help them do so, he’s enjoying the excitement of what’s to come in the future.
“What else could you want, really?”
