HENDERSONVILLE – A rainbow appeared for a few moments during the first half of Pope John Paul II High’s boys soccer match against Montgomery Bell Academy on Wednesday evening.
It turned out to be the only bright spot in a 5-0 loss to the visiting Big Red in a match played in rainy and windy conditions at the Jim Carell Athletic Complex.
“Obviously, the conditions affected our play, but they were on both sides,” PJP II head coach Alan Mila said. “It was frustrating that we weren’t able to respond well to the conditions.”
MBA sophomore Watson Dill tapped a loose ball past PJP II senior goalkeeper Kyle Sanginario less than 90 seconds into the match.
Then, the Big Red (4-0-1 overall, 2-0 in the Division II-Class AA East/Middle Region) scored twice in 26 seconds, as junior Ellis Moore and senior Will Emerson each struck in the 30th minute.
“We knew that they would come with high pressure,” Mila said. “We knew that they would put us under scrutiny in the back, and unfortunately, they were able to capitalize on a couple of mistakes.”
PJP II senior forward Wyatt Kaiser, who leads the Knights (2-4-3, 0-1) with three assists this season, left the match in the first half with a groin injury and didn’t return.
Junior forward Will Ransom had PJP II’s best scoring chance in the second half, but his shot from the edge of the 18-yard box slid over the crossbar.
MBA received second-half goals from sophomore Cole Deal and freshman Henry Hylbert.
