Matt Aguilar and Kinsey McNaught have known each other since they were little children and grew up going to church together.
On Friday, the McNary High School seniors took part in a signing ceremony together.
Aguilar signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Lane Community College and McNaught committed to play softball at Whitworth.
McNaught, a center fielder, was being recruited by Division I schools Buffalo and Colgate, but when she visited Whitworth’s Spokane, Wash., campus a few months ago and met the coaches, she decided that is where she wanted to play in college.
“They invested their time in me and they asked me to come up to Whitworth to visit with them,” said McNaught, who plans to major in Chemistry and on a pre-med route. “Now that I think about it, New York is a little too far for me. I like the environment and the school is good and just a super awesome place to be.”
As a junior McNaught was a first-team Class 6A all-state selection after batting .500 with 40 runs scored and 17 stolen bases.
Aguilar, a shortstop and second baseman, considered a lot of two-year colleges, but the coaching style of Josh Blunt made the difference of why he wants to play in Eugene.
“Lane was right in that wheelhouse,” Aguilar said. “I loved the coach. I loved his playing style. He’s very old fashioned. That’s how I’ve grown up playing. He sent a lot of players on after their years at Lane, and that’s what I want to do, and he’s giving probably the best opportunity, in my eyes, to do that.”
Aguilar was a second-team all-Greater Valley Conference selection as a junior.
West Salem senior Matthew Lester signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Linn-Benton Community College.
There will be a baseball camp for pitchers and catchers Saturdays Jan. 16 through Feb. 27 at Corban University.
The session for players ages 8 through 10 will take place from 8-10 a.m. and the session for those ages 11 through 14 will run from 10 a.m.-noon.
The cost is $10 for returning South Salem JBO players and $20 for non-South Salem JBO players.
