LOHUD WRESTLING’S MEET THE CHAMPS
Anthony Sulla, North Rockland
Weight class: 113 pounds in Division 1
What was it that made you initially want to wrestle? My gym coach, coach Martin in middle school, would try to persuade me to wrestle every day. Eventually I tried it and fell in love.
What makes the sport unique in your mind? No one can help you when your out on the mat; it’s just you and your competition on clear display.
Have there been moments when you had doubts about whether you could accomplish your goals? Being able to work everyday with coach (Jeff) Swick and coach (John) Hoke, the best coaching duo in the state, along with having John Degl at Iowa Style Wrestling helping me perfect my game, I knew there was no goal I couldn’t accomplish.
What obstacles did you have to overcome this season to become a champ? I kind of had to learn how to wrestle with only one hand after destroying my finger in one of the first tournaments of the year.
How would you describe yourself on the mat? Tunnel vision.
And off of the mat? I’m actually a pretty nice kid.
What are some of your favorite things to do with your spare time? Play pickup sports games with my friends.
Who is your favorite band/artist? Drake.
What is your favorite kind of sandwich? Italian combo with hot sauce.
What was going through your mind when you had your hand raised as a section champ? I just wanted to hurry up and get to my corner to see my coaches.
NOTE: We plan on profiling all 30 Section 1 champions before the New York State tournament begins on Friday, Feb. 26. If you’re a champ and didn’t receive the questions, email beat writer Vincent Mercogliano at email@example.com.
