LOHUD WRESTLING’S MEET THE CHAMPS
Jack Arnold, Pearl River
Weight class: 220 pounds in Division 2
What was it that made you initially want to wrestle? I wanted to be in a sport that had swagger and I was too clumsy for basketball so I decided wrestling would be good enough.
What makes the sport unique in your mind? The fact that its one vs. one on the mat, and although a team is important, it’s ultimately your responsibility to be the best wrestler you can be. If you lose, there’s no one to blame but yourself.
Have there been moments when you had doubts about whether you could accomplish your goals? Yes, but I do my best to surround myself with positive people that build me up, not tear me down.
What obstacles did you have to overcome this season to become a champ? Just senioritis and a few injuries, nothing major.
How would you describe yourself on the mat? Depends on mind state. I can be calm and calculated, fierce and sporadic or lazy and clumsy. It all depends on how I feel before the match.
And off of the mat? Driven and thoughtful.
What are some of your favorite things to do with your spare time? Hang out with friends, create music and art, and enjoy my family.
Who is your favorite band/artist? Hard choice but at the top of my list is undoubtedly Eminem.
What is your favorite kind of sandwich? One that is made by someone else.
What was going through your mind when you had your hand raised as a section champ? That I would have another two weeks of practice!
NOTE: We plan on profiling all 30 Section 1 champions before the New York State tournament begins on Friday, Feb. 26. If you’re a champ and didn’t receive the questions, email beat writer Vincent Mercogliano at email@example.com.
