Merritt Island athletic director and head football coach Jeff McLean was inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame last week in Daytona Beach.
McLean, one of six members of the 40th induction class, was offensive coordinator for the Mustangs for 20 years and has been the head coach for nine. His Mustangs teams have won their last five district championships without losing a district game. He has been involved in 16 district-winning football teams in all at Merritt Island.
McLean is also the athletic director for the school, and he has coached with the track program for 15 years.
The Clermont graduate lettered in four sports in high school before lettering in football and track at Virginia Military Institute. His wife, Jamie, played basketball at Georgia Tech and is a member of that school’s hall of fame. Children Sadie and Shelton play sports for the University of North Florida, and Shelton won the Class 3A state pole vault championship while a student at Merritt Island.
The FACA Hall of Fame recognizes success in athletic coaching and administration, years of service and participation in the association.
