Metro & state: Participation in MHSAA sports enjoys slight in increase

Participation in Michigan High School Athletic Association sports increased 0.57% in 2015-16, despite a slight statewide enrollment decline.

The MHSAA reports that 284,227 athletes took part in the 28 sports that have postseason tournaments sponsored by the organization.

It was the first increase since 2010-11.

Enrollment at member schools dipped 0.71% from 2014-15, continuing a trend that has seen statewide enrollment fall 12% since 2006-07.

Girls participation was up 1.7% in the recently completed school season, and boys participation increased 0.2%.

Girls lacrosse continued its streak of setting a participation record every season since becoming a sponsored sport in 2005, this time with a 7.2% increase to 2,775.

Boys cross-country set a record with a 5.3% increase to 9,254 runners.

Participation in boys bowling was up 3.7% (3,860); girls bowling was up 2.6% (3,047).

Girls softball increased by 5.2% to 13,788.
