USA TODAY High School Sports is beginning its weeklong Midseason Report for high school football by beginning our countdown of which states have the most undefeated teams.

The total right now stands at 1,439 with most states reaching the midpoints of the season.

Last season, 139 teams in 11-man football finished without a loss with Texas leading the way with nine. New York and Florida had eight each.

For 2016, Texas again is in the lead with 118 followed by California with 99.  New York has 75, Florida has 70, Ohio has 67 and Illinois has 65.
