Joe Contario passed 400 wins as the Newark boys cross country coach, an accomplishment Tuesday he celebrated with alumni and other teams in the Wayne-Finger Lakes league.
This is Contario’s 22nd season as coach of both the girls and boys varsity at Newark. His record in dual boys dual meets is 404 wins and 50 losses. The team is undefeated in 21 meets this season.
A track and field coach since 1975, Contario has been a league chairman and an assistant coordinator in Section V. He also was an assistant coach at McQuaid with Bob Bradley. The Newark girls cross country teams Contario has coached have won 353 dual meet wins.
“I made a commitment to this team until 2017,” Contario said about promises made to runners in the 2016 and 2017 graduating classes. “I have not regretted one minute of it.”
