HARRISONBURG — In a game that resembled a heavyweight fight, Harrisonburg outlasted Waynesboro 25-14 in high school football Monday night.
On a beautiful evening for football at Dr. Walter F. Green III Field, the turf was wet but both teams found success on the ground as the Little Giants finished with 208 yards rushing while the Streaks amassed 284 yards for the evening.
The Blue Streaks opened the game with a 73 yard drive that culminated in a Collin Morris 7-yard score and the conversion put Harrisonburg in front 8-0 at the 6:21 mark of the first period.
The Little Giants came right back with a drive of their own, using 10 plays to go 60 yards and score on a Marendon Armon Jones 3-yard run that cut the lead to 8-7 with 2:14 to go in the first.
Harrisonburg went right back to work on the ground, driving from its own 31 deep into Waynesboro territory before losing a fumble that was recovered by Drake Morris that gave the Little Giants the ball back at their own 6 with 7:30 to go in the first half.
Waynesboro drove out of the hole but was forced to punt and the Blue Streaks took over at their own 45 with 3:22 to go in the half. Moments later, quarterback AC White hit KeeShawn Perry on a beautiful 36-yard TD pass with 52.9 seconds to go before the half and Harrisonburg took a 16-7 lead into the break.
The Little Giants rushed for 78 yards while the Blue Streaks amassed 148 yards on the ground in the first half.
Waynesboro opened the third period with a 68 yard drive and DaJuan Moore scored on an 8-yard run that cut the lead to 16-14 at the 7:28 of the third.
The Streaks came right back and drove down the field. Keyed by two 26-yard runs by Marcus Robinson-Jenkins, Harrisonburg hit paydirt on a Simmons 1-yard dive and the Streaks were back in front 22-14 at 3:15 of the third.
Waynesboro drove past midfield but was forced to punt and the Streaks took over at their own 20 at the 9:15 mark of the fourth. Harrisonburg then put together a clock chewing drive of over seven minutes and Roberto Gonzalez-Cavazos hit a 29-yard field goal that made it 25-14 with 1:40 to go.
“We had opportunities tonight,” Waynesboro coach Derek McDaniel said. “Our kids are playing hard and to the whistle. We are not making a play here or there so we could gain some momentum.
“If you make a play here or there, it’s a different story,” he added. “We didn’t get enough stops and we didn’t finish drives like we needed too.”
Marcus Robinson-Jenkins paced the Streaks with 152 yards on 22 carries while Morris 73 yards on 21 rushes.
Jones paced the Little Giants with 120 yards on 19 carries while Moore had 16 rushes for 57 yards.
Waynesboro (1-4) will host Robert E. Lee (3-3) on Friday.
