It was difficult to determine which produced more disillusionment at Evangelical Christian School on Friday night: the weather or Moore Haven quarterback John Cox. The weather made the Sentinels wait, but it was Cox whose four touchdowns led the Terriers to a 35-6 victory.
“Moore Haven is super fast, and when you miss assignments, you pay for it, which is what happened a couple of times,” ECS coach Tyler Gold said.
The loss kept the Sentinels (0-5, 0-2 in 2A-7) winless.
There were two weather delays. A storm in Fort Myers triggered the lightning detector and held off the start of the game by more than an hour and a half. Then another storm blew through, bringing lightning, a torrential downpour and another hour of waiting.
The Sentinels were able to put some points on the board in the fourth quarter when Franco Joseph bumped off tacklers and then broke free for a 39-yard score. Joseph finished the night with 77 yards rushing.
“That was a nice little rip right up the gut. I was happy for him,” Gold said.
Corey Massey led the Sentinels in rushing with 114 yards.
Cox announced his presence in a big way. After the Sentinels turned over the ball on downs on their opening drive, Cox took ran his first play from scrimmage 61 yards to the end zone, giving the Terriers the lead for good after just two and a half minutes of play.
“We overpursue and they give one cut-back and they’re gone,” Gold said. “We don’t have the speed to catch that. You have to play perfect football and be in your gaps. If you’re off one gap, they’re going to take it to the house on you.”
On Moore Haven’s second offensive series, Cox had another big run on the first play, carrying for 28 yards. This time, however, he took to the air to score, as he found Kelton Hallback wide open for a deep pass.
DaShon Ross scored the third touchdown on a 9-yard run in the closing seconds of the first quarter, making it 20-0.
After the second delay, Cox connected with Hallback again for a 34-yard touchdown pass. Cox then scored on a 34-yard run, adding a 2-point conversion run, giving the Terriers a 35-0 lead at halftime and a running clock in the second half.
