Nancy Haggerty, a sports reporter for The Journal News/lohud, and The Journal News/lohud sports staff were named the winners of the 2016 Stan Saplin Media Award, presented annually by The Armory Foundation to journalists and media outlets who have provided outstanding coverage of track and field in the New York City area.

“Nancy Haggerty has had a long career in sports reporting most recently carrying on the great tradition of the Journal News with its excellent coverage of track and field over the many years,” said Dr. Norbert Sander, the president of The Armory Foundation, in a press release announcing the award. “Nancy represents as well the many Journal News reporters who have gone before her bringing track and field to a wide audience in the Lower Hudson region.”

The Stan Saplin Media Award is named after late sports journalist and statistician Stan Saplin, who died in 2002.

Haggerty, who lives in Somers, has been in the journalism profession for more than 30 years, including stints as a sports editor and sports reporter. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Haggerty has been covering track & field for The Journal News/lohud since 2014.

“Winning this award is huge because it reflects the dedication of many Journal News staff members, including our photojournalists,” Haggerty said in The Armory Foundation’s release. “They’ve captured countless memorable moments in time at The Armory.”

“What stands out week-in and week-out is track and field’s unusual camaraderie – opponents wanting very much to win and going all out to do so, but also genuinely happy for another’s success. You don’t find this – not even a hint of it – in most other sports and never, I think, in any on the consistent basis that it’s found in this one. It’s unique, refreshing and really reflects sports at its best.”

Past Stan Saplin Media Award winners from 2007- 2015 include Frank Litsky and William J. Miller of The New York Times, Bill Moore of the Amsterdam News, Ed Grant of New Jersey Track, Walt Murphy of Eastern Track, Elliott Denman of the Asbury Park Press, Marc Bloom  of The Runner magazine and The New York Times, Peter Gambaccini of Runner’s World magazine  and Derek Alvez and George Kochman of the Staten Island Advance.

“We’re extremely honored to accept the Saplin Award, and proud of Nancy and all of our journalists who cover track and field,” said Traci Bauer, the Executive Editor of The Journal News/lohud. “The recognition is especially appreciated when you look at recipients who came before us.”

Haggerty and The Journal News/lohud will be honored at a reception in the Stan Saplin Media Center at The Armory, located at 168th Street and Fort Washington Avenue in Manhattan, at 7 p.m. on March 1.
