Nathan Han became the first player in 30 years to repeat at the MGA/MetLife Boys Championship, posting a 2-and-1 win over Stephen Sul on Friday at Bedford Golf and Tennis Club. Only three players in the tournament’s 48 years have gone back to back. Bruce Soldon was the last player to repeat, winning in 1985 and 1986,
The 15-year-old from Somers has become a terrific putter, which makes him especially hard to beat in match play.
“I made the putts I needed to make,” Han said. “My putting was really solid this week. I struck the ball pretty well too, but overall I think it was my putting that set me apart.”
Sul was on a roll early in the final. The Old Bridge, N.J. resident was 2-up after making three birdies over the first six holes.
The match was all square after Han carded pars at Nos. 7 and 8.
Sul regained the lead with a birdie on the 10th hole, but Han answered immediately, converting a birdie try on the 11th. Han won the next hole with a par and was 2-up after Sul conceded a kick-in birdie on the 15th.
From there is was a matter of making two more pars.
