A week after claiming the Class 4A Player of the Year award, Navarre High School junior Emily Madril edged out Class 5A Player of the Year Payton Grewal of Oviedo to be named the Florida Dairy Farmers 2016 Miss Soccer.
Madril, who has committed to play soccer at Florida State, received 102 total points to beat out Grewal (98) and Class 1A Player of the Year Bri Folds of Lakeland Christian (97).

Emily Madril of Navarre celebrates with teammate Kayla Folse, front, after Madril scored the first goal against Creekside during their Region 1-4A title game at Navarre in 2015. On Tuesday, Madril was named Class 4A state player of the year.
The junior forward scored 40 goals and dished out 24 assists for the Raiders, who finished as district runner-up to NIceville and then lost to the state runner-up Eagles in the Region 1-7A finals.
“It’s a very special thing to get this award,” Madril said. “(Wednesday) has been pretty surreal. When I found out I won, it was announced in front of the whole team (Navarre Raiders) … I was so excited. That was such a cool way to have it announced.
“It’s four months a year with those girls, every day. The closer you are as friends the better you play as teammates. So I try to have a strong relationship with every girl on the team.”
Madril’s deep connection with her teammates off the field is only stronger when competition time rolls around.
“We’ve had multiple games where Emily will have chances to score, but she purposely looks to get her teammates involved,” said Navarre coach Rob Simon, in his eighth year with the Raiders. “When she’s (Madril) not in the game, she is trying to help other players. Even during JV games, you’ll see Emily on the sidelines talking to the young forwards.
“If you allowed it, Emily would play soccer 24/7.”
Madril named 4A player of the year
Madril and Simon established a connection in Summer 2014, when Madril moved to Navarre from Idaho.
Madril said that she and her family were immediately impressed by Simon’s friendliness and his eager drive to get Madril involved with the program.
“He (Simon) really shows how much he cares about this team and the sport of soccer,” Madril said. “He works hard for this team and never gives up on us. Even when he was sick last year, he still did everything he could to coach us. (Simon) is a special coach who has had a big impact on my career and I’m sure everyone else on this team has been impacted by him too.”

Navarre High Principal Brian Noack (left) announced that Emily Madril was named Florida’s Miss Soccer, in front of Madril (right) and her teammates on Wednesday at Navarre.
Madril becomes the second player from the Pensacola area to be named the Miss Soccer recipient, joining Gulf Breeze’s Annie Adams, who won the award in 2001.
“It’s awesome, that’s the best way to say it,” Simon said. “As a coach, we are obviously here to help develop talent and win games. I’m always happy to see current and former players reach exciting times of their lives.
“For one of my athletes to get an award, like Emily has … it’s just awesome. She’s such a great person off of the field. This award is a testament to her commitment level and all of the hard work she, her past coaches and her family has put in over the years. Emily always strives to be a better player and person.”
Oviedo coach Scott Waisanen was named the Girls Soccer Coach of the Year after leading the Lions to the Class 5A state championship.
