The seeds for the NCAA Division I wrestling championships were announced on Wednesday night, with locals Brian Realbuto and Steven Rodrigues landing in the top six in their weight classes.
Realbuto, a Somers graduate who is now a junior for Cornell University, will be the No. 2 seed at 174 pounds. He finished the regular season 33-3, which included a 14-7 loss on Jan. 2 to Penn State’s Bo Nickal, who will be the No. 1 seed. Realbuto was an NCAA finalist last season, where he lost a 10-2 major decision to Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez.
Rodrigues, a Fox Lane graduate who is now a senior for the University of Illinois, will be the No. 6 seed at 165 pounds. He finished the regular season 25-3, with his three losses coming against second-seeded Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin (a 5-2 decision on Jan. 31) and third-seeded Bo Jordan of Ohio State (a 6-3 decision on Jan. 3 and a 10-2 major decision on March 5). Rodrigues has yet to wrestle top-seeded Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State this season.
The D-I championship tournament will be held March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden.
