New Albany Little League moves to quarters at state tournament

New Albany Little League meets Fort Wayne St. Joseph Central Monday at 12:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the state tournament in South Bend following a 23-1 rout of Bedford Sunday to close pool play 3-0. Monday’s game will air on WXVW-1450.

New Albany totaled 22 hits Sunday, including three home runs. Already up 9-0 after a seven-run second inning, New Albany tallied 10 runs in the third, highlighted by a James Gill grand slam. The team added four more runs in the fourth, three off a London Gardner homer.

Gill went 3-for-4 and had seven RBI. Hunter Sprigler, who finished the game for New Albany on the mound, went 4-for-4 with five RBI and a home run. Gardner went 3-for-3 with four RBI.

Liam McCauley and Carson Chandler had a combined perfect game working until the fourth, when Bedford tallied its only hit of the game, a home run.
