NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Playing without its best player, the New Albany High School girls basketball team got its season off to a raucous start with a convincing 57-36 win over Evansville Bosse Saturday afternoon.
New Albany’s 6-foot-1 senior forward Chyna Anthony, who recently verbally committed to play at Northern Kentucky, sat on the sideline with a boot on her left foot. Anthony injured the ankle during New Albany’s sectional soccer match against Floyd Central on Oct. 6. She said the boot should be removed next week, and likely will return to the New Albany lineup in early December.
“We’re not going to rush her,” said New Albany coach Tammy Geron. “We want her healthy and ready to help us down the stretch. We want to make sure she’s fully healed and ready to go.”
Without her, New Albany got a big lift from Savanna Pinkston, who led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds in her first ever varsity game. Pinkston missed all of last season with a knee injury.
“She had a great, great offensive night,” Geron said of Pinkston, who hit 8 of 12 shots. “She’s just a smart player and really helps us inside.”
Julyen Condra added 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Kelsy Taylor, who picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter, had nine points.
“They definitely know they have to fill that void,” Geron said. “Man, I think a lot of kids stepped up big today.”
In the final minute of the third quarter, New Albany’s point guard, Marissa Jones, who had nine assists, went down and appeared to grab her knee in pain. As it turned out, Jones just had cramps, received some treatment and returned to the game.
“It was a great first game for us,” she said. “We came out and played really hard, and that’s what I wanted.”
Ma’Nya Adams led Bosse, also playing its season opener, with 14 points.
