Leading just 7-0 in the second quarter, Jennings County lined up for a 32-yard field goal midway through through the quarter.
Luke Kaiser penetrated the line and blocked the kick off the foot of Jennings County’s Dylan Boswell. Jaylin Ray grabbed the loose ball and raced 65 yards for the score, igniting the Bulldogs to a 42-7 win Friday night in their Hoosier Hills Conference opener.
“I say you’re not going to block every kid,” Coultis said. “But if you don’t think you will, you won’t. … Every once in a while, you will.
“It’s a 10-point swing. It’s huge. That’s why you have to believe in those things.”
After Ray recovered a fumble on Jennings County’s next possession, the Bulldogs faced fourth and one at the Panthers’ 27.
Darquan Richardson took the handoff, went right and then planted his right foot to cut left toward the left side and easily scampered to the end zone, giving New Albany a 21-0 lead with 3:56 left in the half.
After forcing a punt, the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 Hoosier Hills) went to the air and needed just five plays to extend the halftime edge to 28-0 as sophomore quarterback Dylan Clark found senior Davin Alexander in the right side of the end zone with 52.9 seconds left in the second quarter.
It stayed 28-0 until senior linebacker Tyler Triplett picked off a pass at the 23-yard line and ran it in for a touchdown with 5:09 left in the third quarter.
With 1:38 left in the third quarter, De Tre Payton had a 20-yard scoring run of his own, giving the Bulldogs a 42-0 commanding edge.
Jennings County (0-3, 0-2) engineered a 14-play scoring drive in the fourth quarter, capped by a two-yard TD plunge by Ramon Becker.
