New Stanford commit Drew Dalman is lowest-rated recruit in class, but may be best fit

Stanford football coach David Shaw landed a new football commit on Tuesday when center Drew Dalman opted for Stanford rather than Washington, Arizona, Michigan, Colorado and other more academically oriented programs, including Columbia. On paper, Dalman is the least heralded prospect to join Stanford’s Class of 2017. In person, he might just be the best fit.

As a senior, Dalman is the rock on the line for Palma High from Salinas, Calif. His father, Chris Dalman, was exactly the same years earlier, before he also headed to Stanford. Chris Dalman eventually ended up as a San Francisco 49er, using his athleticism to differentiate himself from the pack.

It’s a skill that has been passed on to his son, who is a two-way starter for Palma. And there’s no question of culture fit with Drew Dalman because he’s spent plenty of time at The Farm; after his NFL career, Chris Dalman served as an assistant coach at Stanford in 2007 and 2008 under current Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. The fact that one of the other schools aggressively pursuing him is Columbia speaks to his academic bona fides.

“I have a pretty vivid memory of them,” Dalman previously told Rivals.com. “I’m not sure if it was spring or during the season – but (I was) going up and trying to run along the sideline next to the players as they were conditioning and thinking how huge and fast they were and how great it is to play football and be at Stanford and everything like that.

“I love the college town environment that I’ve seen in a couple of schools, like Stanford. So that would be big for me. Of course the academic side, I definitely try to push myself educationally. So that would be a huge point of interest for me as far as colleges go. And then the feeling I get from the football team, the coaches, the facilities, everything about the team would be definitely up there with those three big points as far as choosing a college.”

Now that choice appears to be made. If there could be a better fit or Dalman than Stanford, and vice versa, it would be hard to find.
