No. 10 Roswell (Ga.) continued to run roughshod through the state’s Class AAAAAAA playoff bracket, upending host Westlake (Atlanta) at Lakewood Stadium, 28-0, to reach the Georgia Dome for next week’s state final. It will be the Hornets’ second consecutive trip to the state final.
Playing against his former school, Roswell senior quarterback Malik Willis keyed the victory by running for a TD and throwing for two others. The Virginia Tech-bound QB got the scoring going when he rushed in from 7 yards out, giving the Hornets the 7-0 lead with two minutes to play in the first quarter.
After both teams played to a stalemate deep in the second quarter, Sheldon Evans found the end zone from 3 yards out to make it 14-0 after the extra point with 2:08 remaining before halftime. The score was set up on big receptions from Kentrell Barber and Christian Ford. That score held up until halftime.
With 4:53 to play in the third quarter, Willis found Jayden Comma for a 46-yard score to extend the Roswell lead to 21-0. That was Comma’s 10th touchdown reception of the season.
With 7:33 to go in the fourth, Willis finished the scoring when he hit Tyneil Hopper for a touchdown and it was 28-0 after the extra point.
Xavier McKinney had two interceptions for the Hornets.
A year after being the state runner-up to Colquitt County, the Hornets (14-0) get a shot at a state title on Dec. 10 at the Georgia Dome. Awaiting the Hornets is No. 12 Grayson, which toppled No. 14 Mill Creek Friday night.
