South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.) salvaged some South Carolina pride by downing No. 12 Mallard Creek (Charlotte, N.C.) 17-6 on Friday.
The Mavericks fell to 3-1 with the loss after winning their two previous games this season against South Carolina teams. Mallard Creek won 7-3 at Dillon in its opener and toppled Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) 21-14 two weeks ago.
Mallard Creek hurt itself with 16 penalties for 163 yards.

South Pointe took a 7-0 lead on a 3-yard run by quarterback Derion Kendrick following a drive that included three first downs on third-down plays. Just before the half, BT Potter hit a 44-yard field goal to put South Pointe up 10-0.
Nazjae Bryant ran for a 10-yard touchdown to cut South Pointe’s lead to 10-6 midway through the second half, but shortly after, Kendrick found J.P. Pendergrass for a 56-yard touchdown pass to put the win away.
South Pointe has won two consecutive 3A titles while Mallard Creek has won three consecutive 4AA state titles.
The Mavericks play host next Friday to West Charlotte (Charlotte) while South Pointe (4-1) next plays Ridge View (Columbia) on Sept. 30.
