No. 12 Mill Creek (Ga.) blanks Newton in first round of state playoffs

By

No. 12 Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) has been dominating opponents all season, and that trend continued into the playoffs in the Hawks’ 41-0 win against Newton (Covington, Ga.) in the first round of the Class AAAAAAA playoffs.

Quarterback Cameron Turley threw four touchdown passes to reach 25 on the season and 44 on his career, both well surpassing school records.

Ace Williams got Mill Creek (11-0) on the board when he made a one-handed catch for a 14-yard touchdown reception, and Brenton King’s extra point gave the Hawks the 7-0 advantage.

On Newton’s next possession, Victor Heyward intercepted a pass off a tip from teammate Matt Winston, giving the Hawks possession at the Rams’ 22 yard line. King hit a 35-yard field goal, and the Hawks were rolling at 10-0.

Things didn’t get better for Newton as, on its next possession, the offense was stopped on fourth down and Mill Creek took the ball over on the Rams’ 29. The Hawks’ drive finished with King hitting a 40-yard field goal to give Mill Creek the 13-0 with 3:24 left in the first quarter.

After the teams played to a stalemate deep into the second quarter, Winston changed that when he intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards to the Newton 13-yard line. Turley then hit Preston Norwood for the 12-yard score, and it was 20-0 with six minutes to go in the half.

Just two minutes later, Turley hit Trey Turner for a 32-yard score. The rout was on as the Hawks took a 27-0 lead into halftime.

With 10 minutes to go in the third quarter, Turley added to his record totals when he hit Norwood for a 25-yard score to make it 34-0. A Heyward interception return for a touchdown then made it 41-0.

The Mill Creek defense, which returned just one starter from last year’s team, brought its regular-season strength to the postseason. The unit that came in allowing just 10.3 points a game pitched its fifth shutout of the year.

Mill Creek will host Cherokee (Canton, Ga.) in the second round on Nov. 18.
