Three-time North Carolina 4A champion Mallard Creek (Charlotte) relied on its defense to win 7-3 at Dillon (S.C.), ending the four-time South Carolina AA champion’s win streak at 37 games. The streak was the sixth-longest active run in the nation entering the season.
Mallard Creek took a 7-0 lead with 3:53 left in the second quarter on this 2-yard touchdown run:
Dillon had a 30-yard field goal.
It had several chances to score late in the game, but Mallard Creek continually stopped Dillon in the red zone. The Wildcats’ biggest chance in the first half was nullified when a 40-yard touchdown catch by Johnny Allen was called back because of an illegal shift.
Dillon’s last loss was in 2013 when it fell 27-6 to Marlboro County (Bennettsville). It also lost 27-21 that year to Mallard Creek.
