No. 13 Roswell (Ga.) pounds Peachtree Ridge to advance in playoffs

Senior quarterback Malik Willis accounted for three touchdowns as No. 13 Roswell (Ga.) handled Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, Ga.) in a Class AAAAAAA second-round playoff game, 29-12.

Roswell (12-0) took an early 6-0 lead as the Virginia Tech-bound Willis hit Christian Ford for the touchdown with eight minutes to go in the first quarter (the extra-point attempt was no good).

Roswell had a chance to extend the lead early with the ball deep in Peachtree Ridge territory, but Willis threw an interception on the opposing goal line. The Hornets took that 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

Kicker Turner Barckhoff hit a 33-yd field goal with 3:30 left in the second quarter, and Roswell extended the lead to 9-0. That score stood until halftime.

With nine minutes to go in the third quarter, four-star recruit Xavier McKinney provided insurance in the form of a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown that pushed the lead to 16-0.

Willis then ran for a 2-yard touchdown around the left end to start the fourth quarter, increasing the Roswell cushion to 23-0.

Willis later hit JaJuan White for a 15-yard score to widen the hosts’ advantage to 29-0. Peachtree Ridge (6-6) rallied with a pair of late scores, but the final result stood. The Hornets tied up the series between the schools, 2-2-1.

Roswell, which reached the AAAAAA final last year, will face North Cobb (Kennesaw, Ga.) on Nov. 25 in the quarterfinals.

The Hornets have now won 26 of its last 27 games and are on an 18-game home winning streak. The Hornets’ last defeat at home came against Wheeler, 28-14, in 2014.
