No. 16 Roswell (Ga.) quarterback Malik Willis led his team to a 42-21 defeat of North Cobb (Kennesaw) in the state AAAAAAA quarterfinals Friday.
Hornets defensive back Xavier McKinney came up with two big interceptions, the second to thwart the Warriors from getting a third consecutive touchdown to tie the score.
Willis, a Virginia Tech commit, threw a touchdown pass to Louisville commit Corey Reed with 2:10 to go in the first quarter and less than a minute later, connected with Jayden Comma to put Roswell up 14-0. Willis made it 21-0 with a touchdown run early in the second quarter. Willis had a late touchdown pass to Christian Ford to put the Hornets up 35-14 and he closed the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown run.
North Cobb, trailing 21-0 at the half, made a game of it briefly when quarterback Will Lovett connected on back-to-back touchdown passes to cut the Hornets lead to 21-14. The second score came shortly after a Roswell fumble.
The Hornets (13-0) have won 19 games in a row and advance to a AAAAAAA state semifinal matchup on Friday with Westlake (Atlanta). The Warriors finish their season at 1o-3.
