It can be hard to make a move at the top of the Super 25 rankings, particularly when the teams ahead all keep winning. Regardless of impact on the rankings, don’t accuse No. 4 Mater Dei of putting forth anything short of maximum effort.
Using an overpowering offense and full-on asphyxiating defense, the Monarchs shellacked area rival La Mirada, jumping to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and cruising from there. All-everything wide receiver Osiris St. Brown had two touchdown receptions, as did CJ Parks, all from quarterback JT Daniels. By game’s end, nine different receivers had caught passes from Daniels.
The other St. Brown brother, Amon-Ra, also pulled in a touchdown reception for Daniels, who finished the night after the third period having passed for 387 yards and the five touchdowns. A running clock kicked in after the Mater Dei lead expanded to 41-0, en route to the final 48-0 rout.
Will the one-sided victory be enough to lift Mater Dei in the rankings? That may depend on a slip up from No. 2 Booker T. Washington or No. 3 IMG Academy. Even if they don’t, Mater Dei can feel comfortable that it has again made a stirring argument that it may be nation’s best team.
