No. 7 Allen (Texas) retook the lead with less than 10 minutes remaining and then added a later touchdown to beat Trinity (Euless, Texas), 34-25, on Friday in a Class 6A, Division I, Region I, bi-district game .
Trinity’s Courage Keihn scored touchdowns on runs of 15 and 9 yards to turn a 24-13 deficit into a 25-24 lead in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.
The Eagles (11-0) responded by driving the ball down to the 2-yard line and opted for a 20-yard field goal on fourth-and-goal to take a 27-25 edge with 9:36 remaining.
Trinity moved the ball into Allen territory but a third-and-short play that netted a first down was called back by penalty and Trinity had to punt. A short punt gave Allen the ball at its own 35-yard line. Using its ground game, the Eagles ran time off the clock before quarterback Mitchell Jonke scored on a 5-yard run in the last two minutes to set the final margin.
Brock Sturges finished with 127 yards and a touchdown. Jonke passed for 99 yards and a TD and ran for 42 yards and a score.
According to the Dallas Morning News, special teams were key: Allen had two field goals, got a 92-yard kickoff return from Taj Bickham and pinned Trinity inside the 10 three times.
For Trinity, Keihn had 158 yards and three touchdowns and Greg Garner ran for 112 yards.
Trinity outgained Allen 357-300, including 312-201 on the ground.
