Sheldon Evans’ short run with just more than a minute left allowed No. 9 Roswell (Ga.) to escape with a 17-14 defeat of unranked Etowah (Woodstock, Ga.).
Etowah quarterback Patrick Ferris had two touchdown passes to lead the Eagles’ upset attempt. One play after he was sacked midway through the third quarter, Ferris dusted himself off and found Stuart Head for a 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Eagles up 20-14.
Late in the game, Head was driving at his own 40-yard line, but his last-ditch Hail Mary throw was intercepted by the Hornets to end the game.
After a scoreless first quarter, Roswell scored on a pick six to go up 7-0. On the next series, however, Etowah answered with a bomb from Ferris to Head.
Midway through the second quarter, Etowah was driving after an interception of its own but Roswell intercepted in the end zone. The Hornets went up 10-7 at the half on a field goal by Turner Barckhoff.
Roswell (8-0) will play host to Woodstock on Friday. Etowah (4-4) will play Friday at Walton (Marietta).
