The Matchup: No. 9 St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) vs. No. 17 DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) at 8 p.m.

St. John’s College player(s) to watch: DeJuan Clayton is tough to keep out of the paint off the dribble and Anthony Cowan scores in a variety of different ways. Cowan’s change of direction, blow-by dribble is devastating for the defense. Cowan, a Maryland signee, scored 19 points in St. John’s win over Bishop McNamara on Sunday.

DeMatha player(s) to watch: Markelle Fultz, a Washington signee, is a matchup problem for most teams because of his exceptional combination of speed and athleticism. Fultz scored 23 points in the semifinal win over Gonzaga College on Sunday. Also, D.J. Harvey is an elite wing who uses his versatility to takeover games. He can also guard all five positions on the floor.

What to expect: DeMatha avenged last year’s state title loss to Gonzaga and will no doubt be focused on closing the deal in its third straight WCAC title appearance. Still, this game will be won or lost in the backcourt. The Fultz vs. Cowan matchup is the most intriguing and for good reason. It’s highly like that whoever wins that duel will ultimately take home the state title hardware.
