North Harrison holds off Scottsburg to advance to sectional semifinals


Sophomore guard Hallie Hinton hit four straight free throws in the final minute – including two to ice it with 6.5 seconds remaining – as North Harrison held off upset-minded Scottsburg 47-46.

Hinton’s two free throws with 53 seconds left in the game gave the Lady Cats a 45-40 lead. Down five, Scottsburg answered with a 3-pointer by Paige Barrett with 12 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Hinton was fouled and hit both free throws to make it a four point lead.

“She’s a pressure player,” North Harrison coach Missy Voyles said of Hinton. “I depend on her in that role.”

North Harrison needed the cushion as Scottsburg closed out the game with a 3-pointer to make the final margin.

In a closely contested first quarter, North Harrison got the late edge when 6-1 freshman forward Lilly Hatton had a put-back to make it 13-11. Hatton scored to start the second quarter for a 15-11 lead, then Scottsburg answered with a 3-point play by Paige Barrett and a 3-pointer by Taylor Means to tie it at 17-17 with 5:46 left in the first half.

The score was tied at 21 and 23 late in the half before North Harrison got a buzzer beating 3-pointer by Jourdan McAfee to lead 26-23 at the break.


The Lady Cats had a 29-23 lead when Scottsburg fought back in the third quarter. A made three-pointer and a foul shot by Emma Waskom – a rare 4-point play – capped a 7-0 run and put the Warriorettes on top 30-29.

Hatton answered for the Lady Cats, her two free throws and a field goal put North Harrison on top 33-30 going into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cats never trailed in the fourth quarter, taking a 41-34 lead after a 3-pointer by Taylor Rennirt – set up by a steal and an assist by Stevi Burns.

Down seven, Scottsburg fought back. Leah Hunefeld got behind the Lady Cats defense twice and scored to make it 41-38 with four minutes left.

It was 43-40 inside the final minute before Hinton closed it out. For the game, Hatton scored 18 points and Hinton added 13 – including three 3-pointers – to pace North Harrison.

Scottsburg, which finishes at 14-10, was led by Waskom and Barrett, who scored 14 points each. Hunefeld added 10.
