Ben Pogue threw three touchdown passes Friday night as North Fort Myers built a 40-14 lead on its way to a 40-30 victory against Barron Collier.
North (6-3) also got touchdown runs from Fa’najae Gotay, Zaquandre White and Luis Alfonso.
Pogue (312 yards passing) connected with Terry Lindsey, Errick Harris and Herb Riggins for scores. North’s quarterback was knocked out the game late in the fourth quarter on a hard sack that led to Tyler Mansfield’s 45-yard fumble return touchdown.
“That kid’s such a leader,” North coach Earnest Graham said of Pogue. “You saw him stand here and deliver passes. He’s done everything we’ve asked of him. I can’t say enough about that kid.”
Graham said that he believed that Pogue had sustained a concussion on the hit.
North Fort Myers also ran for 244 yards. White finished his Red Knights career with 104 yards rushing on 16 carries. Gotay’s touchdown was on an 80-yard scamper.
Harris had 108 yards and a TD on three receptions.
Barron Collier (5-5) was led by Devon Brown’s three touchdown runs.
“They did not quit,” Graham said. “It’s been that kind of game two years in a row (North won 44-41 in 2015). We love playing this program. It was a very good game.”
Dana Brown ran for 140 yards and three Barron Collier touchdowns.
“He ran downhill hard all night,” Graham said of Brown. “We knew they were a team that was going to drive the ball and try to punch it in the end zone.”
North Fort Myers led 40-14 midway through the fourth quarter before Barron Collier mounted its rally. Brown scored his third TD and Mansfield’s scoop-and-score got the Cougars within 10, aided by two successful two-point conversions. However, after pulling off an onside kick, BC was thwarted when North’s Joe Wilkins picked off his second pass of the night.
The Cougars, who have lost their last two, still have a playoff game next Friday night at Fort Myers.
“We’re in the playoffs,” Barron Collier coach Mark Jackson said. “Anytime you come out here you want to play to win.
“I thought we fought like heck in the fourth quarter.”
