This season is bound to be a promising one for Port Huron Northern’s girls basketball team.

However, before the season even kicks off, one of its most dangerous players already knows where the next step of her career will be.

Bree Bauer — the Huskies’ versatile post player — has committed to Lake Erie College, signing her Letter of Intent over the weekend.

“It was very exciting to have it all feel real, like it was actually official,” she said.

Bauer had a breakout year for the Huskies in last season that ended in the Class A quarterfinals after winning the MAC Red title. On 54 percent shooting from the field, Bauer averaged 12.2 points per game to go along with her 6.8 rebounds per game.

Northern head coach Mark Dickinson knows as well as anyone how much of an impact Bauer can have at the next level.

“She’s very coachable, athletic and someone who’s really worked on her outside game and ball handling,” Dickinson said. “She’s the total package, and I think they’ll get a player with a lot of upside.”

Bauer certainly hit her stride starting in the middle of the season last year, helping Northern go on an improbable run to win the MAC Red title after an 0-3 start in the league. With her tenacity in the paint on both sides of the court, the Huskies may not have been able to accomplish what they did without her.

“We had an idea that she had that kind of potential,” Dickinson said. “She’s athletic, and when you go to that next level (in college) you got to be athletic. She runs the court as well as most guards.”

In the end, Bauer selected Lake Eric College over Tiffin, Hope College and Siena Heights. What pushed the Storm over the edge was the comfortability when she arrived on campus earlier this fall for a camp.

“They were very welcoming when I went down there to visit,” Bauer said.

Bauer isn’t the only area athlete suiting up for the Storm’s basketball team next year as Marine City’s Paige Tranchida also signed to play there. The pair have playing experience together, competing on the same AAU team in the past.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Bauer said. “We can’t wait.”

Bauer and the Huskies also can’t wait for this season to kick off as they only graduated one player from last year’s team — albeit a solid one in Times Herald Player of the Year Kiana Votava. However, even though the Huskies return as a strong team, so will plenty of other MAC Red teams.

“I feel pretty confident, but our league is probably the strongest it’s ever been,” Bauer said. “We lost Kiana, and not a lot of other teams lost a lot of players.”
