Taylor Moton’s has become a Mid-American Conference champion and a first team all-league offensive lineman during his big senior season on the field for the No. 14 Western Michigan football team.
The Okemos graduate can now add All-American to that list.
Moton was named second team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America on Monday. He became the first Bronco offensive lineman to earn All-American honors since Kevin Haverdink in 1988.
Moton led a Western Michigan offensive line that currently ranks No. 22 in the country in rushing offense. The Broncos have also allowed just 14 sacks – the 11th fewest in the nation.
OLIVET COLLEGE: Comet senior punter Ryan Anderson (DeWitt) was a repeat Division III first team All-American selection by the American Football Coaches Association on Monday.
Anderson had a 46.2 punting average this fall to break the Division III single-season record. He had a long punt of 65 yards and 18 of his 47 kicks traveled more than 50 yards. Anderson landed 15 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
The contributions from Anderson helped Olivet to a 9-2 record, an outright MIAA title and a second playoff appearance in school history.
MICHIGAN: St. Johns graduates Zac Hall and Logan Massa accounted for two of the six match victories for the No. 10-ranked Wolverine wrestling team in its loss to No. 18 Minnesota on Sunday. Hall won by major decision at 149 pounds. Massa, who is ranked No. 2 in the latest InterMat rankings, won by technical fall in his 165-pound match to improve to 15-0 this season.
HILLSDALE COLLEGE: Junior center Allie Dittmer (Eaton Rapids) and sophomore forward Makenna Ott (Haslett) played big roles for the Charger women’s basketball team in wins over No. 16-ranked Grand Valley and Ferris State last week. Dittmer had 14 points and 14 rebounds in the upset win over GVSU, while Ott added 13 points in the win. Ott had a team-best 18 points against Ferris, while Dittmer had seven points and eight rebounds.
Dittmer is averaging a team-best 11.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and shooting 54.1 percent from the field, while Ott is averaging 10.9 points for the Chargers (7-3).
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS EDWARDSVILLE: Lansing native Freddie Rodriguez (Everett) was recently named the Southern Conference wrestler of the month for November after going 8-0. The senior 125-pounder won a pair of tournaments in his weight class during his perfect month. Rodriguez is 10-2 overall this season.
