The Palm Desert boys’ tennis team reached the California Interscholastic Federation quarterfinals in Division 1 on Friday with a decisive 17-1 victory at Viewpoint.
The Aztecs nearly ran the table, but lost one set in singles to prevent the sweep.
Palm Desert will play on the road again Monday, against a Peninsula squad that eliminated the Aztecs a year ago.
“It will be a revenge game for sure,” head coach Brian Jacobs said. “We want to play them again.”
Top singles players Connor Rapp and Alex Kuperstein both swept their three sets, as did all three doubles teams. It wasn’t a close contest.
“The boys on this team, they have a special energy that makes them tough to stop once they get going,” Jacobs said. “They really brought it today. We just went right through our opponent.”
Palm Springs 9, Cathedral City 0: Thomas Wang batted 2-for-3 from the plate, with three RBIs and Addison Degollado was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Indians in the win. Zac Costello was the winning pitcher, with four strikeouts and a pair of walks, and Rashad Poole was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Palm Springs.
