SOMERS – Pawling, the defending Somers Tournament champion, would have liked to have played later Thursday.
That’s when this year’s tournament final was held.
But the young Tigers looked much improved from last week as they defeated Yorktown 3-1 in the tourney’s consolation contest.
The same could be said for Yorktown, which kept Pawling off the scoreboard until 27 minutes were left in the second half.
That’s when Carly McGrath scored off an assist from Ava Panzer
Yorktown tied it about nine minutes later on Katie Vogel’s unassisted goal.
But the game turned on the Tigers’ ability to cash in on its penalty corners and Yorktown’s inability to do the same.
Yotkown’s defense made a huge stop off a penalty corner shot with 9:23 to go but the rebound came out to Courtney Adams. She hammered home what proved to be the winning goal.
Panzar got the assist.
The penalty corner followed Tiger Sam Smith’s interception of a Yorktown pass.
But Pawling wasn’t through. At 6:52, Frankie Fleming showed off her hand-eye coordination. Off another corner, she batted in a deflected ball that was high over her head.
Yorktown goalie Olivia Sanchez (four saves) had no chance on the play.
Sarah Campbell was credited with the assist.
“Corners can make or break a game,” Yorktown coach Bernadette Gannon said. “We had our corners and they could have been used to capitalize.”
Instead, Yorktown developed little offense out of its eight corners. Pawling had only three corners, cashing in the two times.
Pawling goalie Lauren Sullivan had six saves.
Pawling also received a strong defensive effort from Adams, who stopped a one-on-one midway through the second half, and from Isabela Santiago, who came up big on corners.
Pawling coach June Lagan said her team still has a long way to go. But she was pleased with Thursday’s effort.
“The kids came out to play today,” she said. “We were finally able to get it together.”
