Penfield junior Tyler Senall finished third in the large-school race at the Wayne Invitational. He ran 15:36 to lead the Patriots to victory.

This was supposed to be a strong season for the Penfield boys cross country team, based on individual performances in track last spring and summer, plus off-season training.

“Last year in the (cross country) sectionals, we were third, and we only had our seventh man graduating,” Penfield coach Dave Hennessey said.

No setbacks for the Patriots, so far. Penfield landed at No. 1 in the first two Section V Class A/B Coaches’ Polls, before the McQuaid Invitational on Saturday. The Patriots are 11-0, with wins over No. 2 Brockport, No. 3 Fairport, No. 4 Brighton, No. 7 (tied) Pittsford Mendon, No. 6 Churchville-Chili and No. 9 Greece Arcadia in dual meets.

There are also first-place finishes at the Wayne and West Seneca West Invitationals on Penfield’s résumé.

Penfield’s top eight runners: Tyler Senall, a junior), Brad Farnham (senior), Jack Murphy (senior), Jacob Fredricks (freshman), John Pullano (junior), Conor Davis (senior), Zach Gauranski (sophomore), and Jake Marchase (sophomore).

“My kids like to race,” Hennessey said. “The kids enjoy putting on the uniform and seeing what they can do, but I know a lot of people who would say you can’t race at every meet. There are rewards in both philosophies.”
