Penfield senior setter Alea Steigerwald has been named an honorable mention All-American by Under Armour and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The 11th annual team, which honors 150 girls nationwide, was released Wednesday.
A fourth-year varsity player committed to Fairfield University, Steigerwald leads the Patriots (17-0) into the Section V Class AA championship match, 8 p.m. Friday at Gates Chili against Victor (15-3). Penfield is the No. 1 seed and swept Victor earlier this fall in a regular-season match. The Blue Devils, seeded second, won Class A2 last year.
Steigerwald leads Penfield in assists with 934 and aces with 107. She also has 210 digs and 98 kills.
“She’s gotten better every year and the difference between Alea as a sophomore and Alea as a senior has been huge,” Patriots coach Andrew Solomon said, referencing the 2014 season when Penfield won its last sectional crown. “Her confidence level has grown immensely. She makes great decisions.”
