Pennfield will induct its second Hall of Fame class Friday night as part of festivities surrounding the Coldwater at Pennfield varsity football game.
Pennfield will induct a 10-member class in 2016, including Randy Erskine, Doug Geno, Robert Grimes, Scott Grimes, Jason Hogan, Bernie Larson, Stephanie Marx, Rick Neglia, Gary Rugg, Orv Stevens.
Randy Erskine – Class of 1966: A standout golfer at Pennfield, earning six varsity letters playing golf and basketball. Erskine went on to play golf at the University of Michigan, becoming a two-time All-American and individual Big Ten champion. Played in the PGA and is in the University of Michigan Hall of Fame.
Doug Geno – Class of 1984: A standout athlete at Pennfield, earning nine varsity letters in football, wrestling and track. Was All-State in football and track and state champion in the shot put. Named Battle Creek Enquirer Athlete of the Year in 1984 and went on to play football at Central Michigan University.
Robert Grimes – Administrator: Was the Pennfield Schools Superintendent from 1993-99 and high school principal for 23 years. Was the president of the MHSAA Representative Council from 1989-99 and earned the Charles E. Forsythe Award from the MHSAA. Instrumental in creating the SMAA league.
Scott Grimes – Class of 1983: A three-sport athlete that earned nine varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. Grimes was the first Pennfield basketball player to surpass 1,000 career points. Named All-City in football, basketball and baseball six times. Was Battle Creek Enquirer Athlete of the Year in 1983.
Jason Hogan – Class of 1991: A three-sport standout that earned All-City honors six times in football, wrestling and baseball. Named MVP in football, wrestling and baseball. Was a state qualifier in wrestling in 1991 and was Pennfield Athlete of the Year in 1991.
Bernie Larson – Athletic Director/Coach: Served as athletic director at Pennfield for 29 years. Coached boys golf for 19 years and girls golf for four seasons. Was 2012 Division 3 Regional Golf Coach of the Year. Honored by the MHSAA as the Allen W. Bush Award recipient in 1997 and the Charles Forsythe Award recipient in 1999. Was MIAAA State Athletic Director of the Year in 1991-92.
Stephanie Marx – Class of 1988: A three-sport standout for Pennfield in basketball, volleyball and softball, earning All-City and all-conference honors in all three sports. Named Detroit News Regional Dream Team in volleyball in 1988 and was Battle Creek Enquirer Athlete of the Year in 1988.
Rick Neglia – Class of 1993: A three-sport star at Pennfield, earning 10 varsity letters in basketball, baseball and golf. Named All-City and all-conference in all three sports and was a member of the state qualifying golf team in 1992. Was named MHSAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in baseball in 1993.
Gary Rugg – Class of 1963: Played football and track, finishing as a four-year varsity letter winner in each sport. Was state champ in shot put three straight years. Broke the single season record for touchdowns in the conference and was All-State in football in 1962. Went on to play college football at Michigan State University.
Orv Stevens – Community Member: Public address announcer for boys and girls basketball from 1974-2006. Official scorekeeper for girls basketball from 1978-2006. Past president of the Pennfield Athletic Boosters and Pennfield Band Boosters. Member of the KVA Hall of Fame.
