TRAVERSE CITY – Jared Smith rushed for the go-ahead touchdown in the late stages of the fourth quarter to help the Pewamo-Westphalia keep alive its hopes of a state championship.
Smith’s late score vaulted the No. 2-ranked Pirates to a 17-14 victory over host and top-ranked Traverse City St. Francis on Saturday afternoon in a Division 7 regional final.
Smith had 91 yards rushing and two touchdowns to help P-W (12-0) capture its third straight regional title. The Pirates advance to face No. 4 Ubly (12-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday in a state semifinal at Mount Pleasant High School.
Alec Thelen added a 39-yard field goal for P-W, which has knocked off two of the other teams ranked in the top three of the final Division 7 rankings in consecutive weeks.
DETROIT COUNTRY DAY 28, CORUNNA 13: At Birmingham, the Cavaliers were held to just 133 yards of total offense while fall to top-ranked Country Day in a Division 4 regional final.
David Dumond had a rushing touchdown for Corunna, which closes the season 9-3. The nine wins were the most in a season for the Cavaliers in more than decade.
Chris Wooley and Owen Walter had interceptions for Corunna.
