GREENSBORO, N.C. – Granted, we’re not even two weeks in to the high school basketball season, but Word of God Christian Academy (Raleigh, N.C.) point guard Blake Harris’ poster against No. 2 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) Friday night at the Phenom Hoops National Showcase has to be an early season candidate for Poster of the Year.
Harris surveyed the court at the top of the key, dribbled left and darted past his defender to an open lane.
Suddenly, as he took off from the middle of the paint, Oak Hill forward Prince Toyambi slid over and attempted the block.
It was too late.
“I saw the opening and I just wanted to make an aggressive play,” Harris said. “My coach told me to start dunking the ball more and to go strong to the basket. That’s all I tried to do.”
The Warriors held on for the 74-63 win and Saturday Mountain Mission (Grundy, Va.) knocked off the Holy Rams off 71-69 on a buzzer beater, which to his credit as a competitor, were the only things that mattered to Harris.
“I definitely would’ve rather gotten the wins,” said Harris, who signed with Washington after Friday’s game. “It was a good play, but I’d trade it for the wins any day.”
