Welcome to the target, Pittsford Panthers.

The first Democrat and Chronicle/Section V Football Coaches Poll is out, and the 2-0 Panthers are on top. Right away, the Panthers face a challenge for No. 1.

Pittsford lines up against No. 2 Victor, undefeated with a win over 2015 state champion Aquinas in hand, 7 p.m. Friday. The Blue Devils already seem motivated when they play at Victor.

There is also the incentive of knocking down a rival, a Pittsford team viewed as the best in Section V right now, according to a handful of area coaches who vote in the poll. The large (Class AA and A) and small schools (Class B, C and D) polls are listed below.

Coach of the Week: Canandaigua’s Jeff Welch is the Buffalo Bills High School Coach of the Week in Section V.

Last season’s sectional runner-up in Class A pulled away from Irondequoit, 42-21, at Evans Field in Canandaigua. Victor’s Geoff Mandile was the Week 1 winner in Section V.

Canandaigua head coach Jeff Welch, right, calls to the sideline as he runs preseason football practice at Canandaigua Academy on Thursday, August 28, 2014.
